Car sales may be falling, but bicycle sales are doing the opposite. Chris Carter, General Manager of Merida Bicycles Ltd, has reported a year-on-year sales increase of 80% for 2008 – and the upwards trend is looking set to continue.
Chris Carter says ‘Interest in bicycles is growing all the time. Our sales were up 80% in 2008 compared to the previous year, and they are up 70% again for the start of 2009. The story seems to be the same all across the country – bike dealers at the National Bike Show in January were all reporting excellent and increasing sales.’
The upturn has been keenly noticed by Anchor Storage, responsible for importing, warehousing and despatching Merida Bicycles from their facility near Felixstowe.
Steve Britt, Managing Director of Anchor Storage, says ‘we are despatching 70% more bicycles now than we were 12 months ago. It is mostly the £300+ bikes that are selling particularly well – it seems people are spending money on a good bike which they can then use in place of a car wherever possible. New Year fitness enthusiasts always boost sales at this time of year, but what we are seeing now is over and above the usual trend’.
