Anchor Storage has reported rising demand for its organic fumigation
chambers following a drift away from organics during the recession. The upward trend
comes just in time for the Soil Association’s Organic Fortnight, during which the
association aims to highlight the health benefits of organic produce.
Stephen Britt, Managing Director of Anchor Storage says ‘We are now organically treating a whole variety of organic and non-organic goods and our Ec02 chambers have been full all summer, which has been a real boost to the company1. This was helped by new and regular business from ‘Heygates’, a supplier to the world’s largest manufacturer of fully-microwavable heat packs, whose wheat is placed in the Ec02 chambers to be organically de-bugged so it can be dispatched to the manufacturers free of unwanted pests!”
Anchor Storage’s Ec02 fumigation chambers are one of only six such facilities in Britain and the first in Suffolk. The system works by sealing goods (anything from rice and dried apricots to clothes, basket ware and even mattresses) in an air-tight room then gradually raising the temperature to stimulate a pest’s life cycle. Once a set temperature is reached and the bugs have respired and are fully active, the atmosphere is modified by reducing the oxygen level. This effectively kills all infestation whilst leaving thefoodstuff unaffected. The chambers thus organically eliminate unwanted pests through a non-toxic process which is totally safe for humans but not at all for the bugs!
Stephen Britt says ‘We store a lot of organically-certified dried fruit, nuts, seeds, pulses
and rice products. Pest-control has always been a problem in such foodstuffs but the
Ec02 treatment means we are able to guarantee our customers, and consumers, a
wholly effective, quick, clean and organic solution to pest control. The technology is very
exciting indeed, and the fact that we can apply it to any product that can physically fit
within the 250-m3 (cubic metre) chambers, means the potential is endless!’
